On This Day, March 7th

On this day in 1987, “Licensed to Ill” by the Beastie Boys became the first rap album to top the charts in the US. It held the #1 spot for seven weeks.

That tape got more play in my boombox than any other at that time. Even today when I hear a Beastie Boys song, I expect the next song to play to be the one that followed it on that tape.

Fun fact: Did you notice the hidden message in their album artwork? If you were a child of the 80’s, you definitely caught it.

Beastie Boys – Licensed to Ill

On the wing, the numbers are 3MTA3, which backwards spell Eat Me.
