On this day in 1987, “Licensed to Ill” by the Beastie Boys became the first rap album to top the charts in the US. It held the #1 spot for seven weeks.
That tape got more play in my boombox than any other at that time. Even today when I hear a Beastie Boys song, I expect the next song to play to be the one that followed it on that tape.
Fun fact: Did you notice the hidden message in their album artwork? If you were a child of the 80’s, you definitely caught it.
On the wing, the numbers are 3MTA3, which backwards spell Eat Me.
