Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam; The Kraftwerk Jam

So one day I was surfing Youtube, like we all do, and I listened to the song “Musique Non-Stop” by Kraftwerk, with is so-very-80s video.

Kinda looks like the early days of SL, doesn’t it?

I thought it sounded familiar, but I figured I had heard it back in the 80s and just forgotten about it, especially since the video looked familiar too.

Then sometime later, I heard this song by Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam.

At first, I thought I was hearing things. But sure enough, there are some definite similarities going on there.

My next thought is that Lisa or someone in her group, or someone in the studio, was a Kraftwerk fan and snuck that in just for fun.

Turns out “Musique Non-Stop” was released in October of 1986. “I Wonder If I Take You Home” by Lisa Lisa was released in… May 1985, over a year and a half earlier.

I suppose it’s possible that Lisa or someone in her crew had heard the Kraftwerk song before it was released. I have no idea if either group heard the other’s song, or was influenced by the other in any way. But I think it’s funny that Lisa Lisa & The Cult Jam managed to be more cutting-edge than the avant-garde Kraftwerk.
