July 26, 1986 On This Day in Music – Peter Gabriel

On this day in 1986, Peter’s Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” was at the top of the charts. I remember the first time seeing this video. I was at my boyfriend’s house with his parents watching. I remember thinking how sexual the video was (innuendo and otherwise) and his parents being there with us. HA! “So” is a great album for sure. “Sledgehammer” won NINE MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) in 1987. Nine!

What’s your favorite from this album? Also, do you know the story behind “Solsbury Hill?” Granted, the song came out in ’77, but I’m surprised how many weren’t aware that it was about him parting ways with Genesis. I’ll post it because I love the song, but really pay attention to the lyrics. They’re so telling.

When illusion spin her net
I’m never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don’t need a replacement
I’ll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom boom boom
“Hey” I said “You can keep my things,
They’ve come to take me home.”
